I have watched quite a lot of movies last week. To keep up with the Chinese New Year mood, it is mostly Hong Kong movies. I just wanted to write this out to share my 2 cents worth about each of the Hong Kong movies I have watched. Here's the list in the order of which one i watched first.Kung Fu Mahjong 3: The Final Duel
Here's the synopsis according to
hkcinemagic.com:
Ken (Roger Kwok), has mastered mahjong and is nicknamed "The Half-Century Man" because he once won 50 hands of mahjong in a roll. Everybody expects him to succeed his father, Uncle Man (Ha Yu), to be the Grandmaster of Kungfu Mahjong. However, Uncle Man has a heart attack on his 60th birthday and is hospitalized. Sophie, Uncle Man's new wife takes the opportunity to persuade him to leave his estate to her instead of his son. Uncle Man tells her that she would get her wish if she beats Ken in a game of mahjong.
Meanwhile, Ken falls in love with Nancy (Shirley Yeung), a lady of rotten luck. All her previous boyfriends were either bankrupt or had died in accidents. Ken's fortunes go downhill instantly, to the extent that when he plays mahjong with Sophie and her lover, Bowie, he's almost cleaned out.
What do I think of this movie? I feel that it does not live up to my expectation. Some slapstick jokes here and there but most of the time, it's not that funny. If you want me to rate it i give it 5/10.
House of Mahjong

Here's the synopsis according to
hkcinemagic.com:
Fu Ho is a millionaire who founded the Fu Gui Mall. To reward the tenants for their continuous support, he sets up a new rental model with them. For which, one representative from each store can be sent to play Taiwan mahjong with him as to substitute for the rent every month.
Gi, who wants to start her new business in Fu Gui Mall needs to learn playing Taiwan mahjong in order to be part of the tenants there. All other tenants teach her the techniques in playing the game. However, Fu Ho defeated Gi but was impressed with her determination. He finally rents a place out to Gi. Meanwhile, Fu Ho' son, Sun Gui, is back to Hong Kong. He knows about it and thinks that his father is cheated.
Sun Gui is planning to take over the business and rebuild the mall. He finds 4 mahjong experts to gamble with tenants. Gi, Sam, Lam and others lost their money and means of survival. Luckily, Lam finds a hidden expert, Master Chow to teach them the trick in playing Taiwan mahjong. They finally turn defeat to victory. Sun Gui decides to settle all things up by setting fire to the mall. At the same time, he finds that his father is missing. Can Gi, Sam and Lam alter the destiny of Fu Gui Mall?
My verdict? It is a big mahjong letdown. Seems like a movie made without much effort. Even less jokes than the one above. Most of the time, it's not funny. My rate? I give it 4/10.
Lady Iron Chef

Here's the synopsis according to
hkcinemagic.com:
Madame To is an expert and highly regarded chef in Hong Kong and China. She wants to form an alliance with other equally respected chef by asking her son, SK to marry Jade, the other chef’s daughter. But SK already has a girlfriend named Ceci.
I watched it with my mother n sister in Genting. My opinion? Well, it's a love story, so it's touching (that's what I feel), it's damn funny, at least the jokes are quite original. What's more they have Charmaine Sheh in it ^.^. I give it 9/10. Hahaha.
Twins Mission
hkcinemagic.com:
A Tibetan Dzi bead, en route to Hong Kong for an exhibition, is stolen by a mysterious gang. Linked to a long-lost cult called the Gemini clan, Lucky, the guardian of the Dzi bead, along with his adopted son Hey, try to persuade the clan's leader to help them track down the thieves. Refusing to be involved, the Principal summons instead the Clan's former members - Twins - to retrieve the bead. (GSC)
I watched this with my gf last Sunday. Hahaha. It is action packed (lot's of smashed glasses), quite an amount of jokes and most importantly, they have Twins in it. Hahaha. I enjoyed it very much. Can't wait for the "ending" part. I also give this 9/10.
There you have it. New Hong Kong movies I watched in the Chinese New Year. Should I make this a tag? Hahaha. Maybe not. I really enjoyed Lady Iron Chef and Twins Mission. I wanna watch Protege and It's a Wonderful Life next. Hehehe.
